Pets in Need: Adoptable
Busy time at HHPR
So far in 2011, HHPR has helped nearly twice as many cats as this same time last year. We have had many adult cats come in to the rescue as well as young mommas with kittens. This has kept us so busy that we have not had time to publish photos here of our adoptables.
If you are looking to adopt, please call 492-1722 or 316-8340. We would also appreciate any form of donation - money, kitten chow, canned cat food (chicken), bleach, postage stamps.
Black is Back (black and white, too) Special until Dec. 24. Black or black and white cats are $15.

Angie is only 7 months old and she has spent 4 of those months at HHPR because of people's hangups with black cats. The only way Angie is unlucky is because of her color and people's prejudice. She is Leukemia/AIDS tested, spayed, all shots, wormed and Revolution treated and during the "Black is Back" event in collaboration with Best Friends, Angie is only $15.00 until Dec. 24. Angie is very clean, healthy and a little shy until she knows you will not hurt her. She came from a horrible hoarder situation and need time to recover from medical and socialization issues in which fear caused her to hide a lot. Angie is physically tiny and loves to be loved once she knows your hands won't hurt her.
Mary is a classic tiger kitty with extra toes & startling green eyes who came from a terrible background (hoarder). She required 6 weeks to feel well & safe. Mary was a young mother with a litter of kittens but no milk to feed them. We syringe fed the litter. Mary loved & cleaned them. But it was too late & we soon lost the babies. Mary grieved. We then gave Mary every orphan kitten to love and clean. She gradually came out of her grief. She is now clean, healthy and happy & is allowed the freedom of the entire house. She takes a while to get used to new people and she probably will not be a lap cat for a while, but she will be a clean, friendly, happy housemate who will allow you to pet her when she on your chair. She is Leukemia/AIDS tested, spayed, all shots, wormed & Revolution treated. Mary is special. Her adoption fee is $25.00.
Taffy is a domestic blk/white long hair, about 2 years old, Leukemia AIDS tested neg. distemper & rabies shots, wormed and Revolutioned (30-day parasite prevention). She is sweet natured, quiet, and mellow. She is very thin and will be beautiful when she gains more weight. Obviously has had a very difficult life and is very grateful to finally be safe. She came in with 2 kittens equally thin because Taffy's milk had dried up. Adoption fee $25.00
Emmanuel is a 2 year old short-hair, orange-tiger, neutered male who is residing in a Halfway Home Pet Rescue foster home. He has been neutered, Leukemia/AIDS tested, all shots, wormed and treated with Revolution (a 30-day parasite prevention). Because our pets are distributed to foster homes, you must make arrangements for you to see them according to the foster family's schedule. A 2-day notice is appreciated. Emmanuel is clean, loving and a bit nervous until he knows you will not hurt him then he melts in your arms. His foster home is teaching him to trust. Emmanuel's adoption fee is $25.00.

Busy time at HHPR
Cats and kittens come to us daily so we might not be able to show them all here. Call us 207 492 1722 or 207 316 8340, or email norma@halfwayhomepetrescue.org for the latest information or to make an appointment to visit us (kittens/cats are in foster homes and we need advance notice to have them available for you to see). Also, come visit us at one of our Adoption Fairs announced on this site and our Facebook page.
Note about Leukemia testing:
We test adult cats for Leukemia/AIDS as part of our health program using the following procedures. Many shelters use this same formula by vet recommendation (1) that if a nursing mother tests negative - her offspring are considered negative or if mother is positive they will all be considered positive. (1) If siblings come in together with no mother at age of 12 weeks you test one of the siblings (the most unhealthy looking one) and the same rule will apply for the rest of the same cat family. Testing kittens under the age of 12 weeks can often result in a false positive reading. (3) if a shelter is working with a feral colony, some shelters will colony test one or two adult cats, HHPR does the same with the exception that if there are a few different colors in the colony - HHPR will test each different color as the adult cats are trapped. If there is a feral mother, the mother is tested before sterilization surgery and the kittens are considered the same as the mother.

Meg is a blk/white spayed female about 1 year. She is a lovely character who is very impressed with her own self-worth. You have to give her some canned food in order to reach in for her litter box or else she will grab hold of your arm and not let you take it. She considers it only fair that if you are going to take something out of her cage, then you first should give her a treat. She never actually uses her claws, but she has everyone here so spooked that I am the only one to take care of her. I love her spirit. Adoption fee $25.
Good Momma (renamed Brenda) is only about 8 months old and still likes to play like a kitten. She came in with 2-week-old babies and while nursing them she took on 5 other orphans that needed nursing and then 2 more orphans. After finally being spayed just this past Friday, she came home and INSISTED that she would not stop being restless until she was allowed to go back to nursing her last two orphans who are just plain spoiled with her attention. Brenda is clean, happy, loving, warm and a totally sweet cat for any family. You won't find one more loving than this. During the "Black is Back" special, Brenda's adoption fee is only $15.00. Better hurry, she really is a great cat.
Sophia is a dark torti about 6 months old. She is Leukemia/AIDS tested, all shots, wormed & Revolution treated (a 30-day parasite prevention. She is shy, but very loving. She takes a little while to learn to trust as she came from an extremely bad hoarder situation and is not used to being loved or fed or cleaned regularly. She loves being clean, fed and loved now, and we all think she is very special. She shys back when you reach for her as she is not sure if you are going to pat or hit. Sophia would like a quiet home. Very nice cat. Adoption fee is $25.00
Dawn is about 1 year, a muted torti spayed female, Leukemia/AIDS test, shots, wormed & Revolution treated (1 30-parasite prevention). She is very quiet, very clean and loving. She enjoyed being petted and walks away from any catty dispute. Her adoption fee is only $25.00.
Sunshine is about 2 years old, a nursing momma right now to 4 of her own and 4 or 5 other orphans as needed. She is shy, but loving. She will need a quiet environment. Sunshine will be spayed and all shots, etc. before adoption. She is leukemia tested negative. Her adoption fee will be $25.00 She is absolutely beautiful and very dignified.
Sugar is a sweetie, a 10-month old spayed female who came to Halfway Home with her feral family of brothers, Petey, Paul and Bill, at about 4 months of age. Sugar is sweet, Leukemia/AIDS tested negative, spayed, wormed x 3, Revolution treated (30-day parasite prevention), and also current distemper & rabies vaccinations. Bill & Petey were adopted. Sugar & Paul grew apart when Sugar discovered Michael and Paul discovered Cuddles. What can we say - at least we had them all fixed. Sugar would like to be adopted with her soulmate, Michael, who is with her today. Sugar is more street-smart than Michael due to her first 4 months living in a wooded feral colony. But she so loves to be petted and loved. Sugar is very clean, friendly and healthy. Her adoption fee is $25.00.
